ONSITE: Cast Drawing

Cast drawing is a traditional method of teaching drawing that was popularized in the 19th Century. Students will draw from casts of sculptures and learn materials handling, methods to master proportions, and techniques for depicting form using line and shading. The main objective of the course is to teach students how to see in a new way. Students will learn how to get an accurate likeness and how to create the illusion of 3 dimensional form on a 2 dimensional sheet of paper. We will have access to various casts of sculptures from the 19th Century back to antiquity. This is a time-honored method for teaching Realist techniques. It is a preferred method because we can study the figure without being pressed for time or being thrown off by the model moving. Historically, students drew from casts and copied master drawings before drawing the model from life. This course is structured so as to teach solid skills and problem-solving techniques and to build knowledge and confidence- all in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere.

Special Notes

  • Basic drawing skills are requited. This class can be taken concurrently with Master Copy Workshop: Bargue Drawing Skills. The ateliers and academies that taught these techniques were off limits to women and people of color, and currently ateliers and most art schools are still not very accessible, Salis, the instructor, takes great pride in sharing this knowledge with all.

This class does not meet on 6/22.

Instructor speaks Spanish, but the class is held in English.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
