ONSITE: Intermediate Poetry Workshop

This workshop is for students who have some experience writing poetry and are looking to dig deeper into their writing practice. In this poetry workshop, we'll read published poems (written by contemporary and historical poets), and we'll use this work to inspire our own creative writing work. We'll write poems, and we'll spend time discussing our poems together, offering each other feedback on our work. Shared readings each week will be selected based on student interests, and poetry readings will be supplemented with additional instructional handouts and materials.

Special Notes

  • Class time will be spent reading and discussing poems, with an emphasis on workshop discussion of our own work, as well as poems by other people. We will try to make time for a writing exercise each week, but students who wish to complete finished poems should expect to continue writing outside of class time. To get the most out of this class, students should expect to do some reading outside of class time. This is an intermediate writing class, and some experience with creative writing is expected. Students should have some familiarity with basic poetry concepts, such as concrete language, figurative language, lines, and stanzas.

This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
