ONSITE: Introduction to Flat Pattern Making

This course will cover the fundamental skills of flat-pattern design. Flat pattern design is the process of using “blocks” or “slopers” to create sewing patterns for apparel design. This course will show students how to take body measurements for pattern making as well as introduce them to the two methods of dart manipulation. Students will use these methods on bodice, pant, skirt and dress slopers in order to create new and original designs.

Special Notes

  • Students should have a basic knowledge of sewing/ garment construction.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.

About the Instructor

Nakia Young-EL

Nakia Young is a creative in almost every area of her life. A graduate of Stevenson university with a Bachelor's in Fashion Design she has worked as a freelance designer, pattern-maker and surface pattern designer in the years since her graduation in 2015. Young has been sewing and designing for over 20 years and also currently works as a paid theater actor.
