Charcoal Portraits

Dive deep into the art of representational portraiture with this charcoal drawing class. We will closely study the facial features, anatomy, proportion, structure, representing light and shadow, texture, facial expressions, and likeness. Some lessons will be done from a live model and others will be done from photographic references. Through hands-on demonstrations, experimentation sessions, and by studying the work of historical and contemporary artists, we will explore the art and technique of portraiture. While a focus will be placed on realistic drawing, all styles and skill levels are welcome!

About the Instructor

Grace Mae Huddleston

Hello! I am an artist and educator. My teaching centers around empowering teens and adults of all skill levels to deepen their connection to art making. I have taught in community centers, schools, and universities. My teaching emphasizes technical skill building and I love it when my students put stories, personality, and deeper meaning into their creations. I primarily teach all things 2D from drawing to painting to mixed media but also have experience with textiles and performance art! In my own art practice, I create 2D works that work with creative writing to build fantastical worlds and tell stories.
