ONSITE: A Beginners Guide to Oil Painting

Learn the ins and outs of oil painting including palette development and color mixing, as well as how to choose and use a variety of supports. We’ll cover composition development and design, constructing an underpainting, using value and mixing and manipulating medium. You’ll also learn how to use a palette knife and create a variety of brush strokes. We’ll review classical and contemporary paintings including still life and landscape, with an introduction to both alla prima and indirect painting techniques. We’ll cover a variety of techniques through weekly exercises and complete small paintings.

  • This class does not meet on 4/25.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.

Catherine Southall holds a BFA in Fashion Design from VCU and has worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years. She is currently a local teacher and a professional artist.
