ONSITE: Create a Sculptural Creature Birdhouse
In this workshop the student will learn a new technique for creating a whimsical creature birdhouse. The student will expand their knowledge of different ways of finishing the surface of a piece by using texture rollers, and stamps to bring the surface to life. We will discuss size and proportion in the class to ensure that their pieces work as a whole unit. At the end of the workshop, the student will have a finished piece and the skills and (hopefully) the inspiration to continue making more art.
Special Notes
The student will need their own pottery tools, fettling knife, stamps and/or texture tools.
This class includes all clay needed. Students will pick up their finished pieces at a later date. This class does not include a clear glaze firing, only underglaze bisque friring.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
About the Instructor
Stephen Palmer
I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay. Through teaching, I hope to share and ignite the same passion and excitement in my students that I have for the ceramic form.
