ONSITE: Mold Making
Learn the basics of mold-making! We will make plaster casts of objects of your choice using a variety of mold-making processes that you can easily repeat at home. We’ll start with simple two-part plaster molds and progress to alginate life casts and silicone molds. At the end of the class you’ll have multiple beautiful plaster casts of your own hand or face and an object of your choice, as well as molds you can use to create more casts.
Special Notes
- Students need to come to the first four to five classes in order to learn the process. The final three to four classes will provide students with more flexibility as they make a mold of an object of their choosing.Students will need to bring a face mask to wear while mixing plaster and alginate. Most supplies will be provided by VisArts but students will need to bring in some simple materials: toothpicks, a small paintbrush, and (in later classes) an object of their choice to use for mold making.Students will have the option to work in pairs to make face casts, which requires students to cover their faces in alginate and breathe through nasal straws for 15-20 minutes. Small amounts of alginate may get into students’ hair and can be washed out at home.
Due to a set of stairs, this classroom is not wheelchair accessible.
This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
