ONSITE: Woodworking for the Absolute Beginner
Basic Woodshop is intended to introduce students to woodworking concepts and tools. Core concepts of carpentry will be discussed, but this course is designed more as an easy introduction to carpentry as the students will choose a simple design of their own to build. We will also explore and gain inspiration from woodworking as art by viewing and discussing the presence of visual art in carpentry. During the course, students will learn safety and handling procedures, reading plans and patterns, and using finishing products. Students will develop fundamental knowledge of woodworking tools such as several types of drills, saws, and other hand-tools such as planes, chisels, and hammers. Throughout the course, the students will work towards completing a final project by the last class session (this may be specific to the class or to the individual student).

This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.

Kimberly Bryan
Kim Bryan is an IT professional with a Liberal Arts degree from the University of Richmond. Originally from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, she has lived in Richmond for over 25 years and has enjoyed the lively culture that this city provides. Kim is a long-time musician and visual artist with an immense passion for expression and education.
